Minister Ma Hui Attends the China Jilin and UK Economic and Trade Symposium

On May 23, 2019, Minister Ma Hui attended the China Jilin and UK Economic and Trade Symposium. Jing Junhai, Governor of Jilin Province, Ms Mei Sim Lai OBE DL, Representative Deputy Lieutenant for the London Borough of Brent, and more than 50 representatives of Chinese and British political, business and media circles and overseas Chinese were present.

Governor Jing said that Jilin Province is an important and old industrial base, commodity grain base and automobile manufacturing base in China. With the current in-depth development of China-UK "Golden Era", Jilin Province is ready to commit itself to facilitating China-UK relations and cooperation in four areas where Jilin has special strengths, namely agriculture and food processing, manufacturers especially automobile and aeronautics, winter sports and tea production. Jilin Province welcomes British investment and strives to create a better business environment for China-UK cooperation in various fields, so as to achieve more fruitful results.

Talking about the huge potential and promising future for trade and economic cooperation between Jilin and the UK, Ma listed three opportunities that the two sides should seize. The first one lies in China's opening up. Jilin is promoting open cooperation and outbound investment, while the UK is working to implement its Industrial Strategy, the "Midlands Engine for Growth" and the "Northern Powerhouse". "Jilin and the UK could match development strategies and policies, and make long-term and sustainable cooperation plans, so as to create a more favorable and business-friendly environment for the cooperation between the two sides", said Ma.

The second opportunity can be found in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The UK is a "natural partner" of China in advancing the BRI, and Jilin is an important link on the northern routes of the BRI. The two sides could explore new ways of BRI cooperation so as to create new growth points for business cooperation.

The third opportunity arises from the growth of China-UK relations. China-UK relationship is standing at a new historical starting point. The two sides could match their complementary strengths and give full play to the mechanisms and platforms such as the China-UK Regional Leaders' Summit and sister provinces and cities to carry out cooperation on auto manufacturing, tourism and environmental protection.

Ma also joined Governor Jing in witnessing the signing ceremony of the first China-UK Comprehensive Pets Industrial Trade Park.
