2019/06/03

On May 31, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. Chen Wen attended the Roadshow of “Invest in Anhui” and the World Manufacturing Convention 2019. Deng Xiangyang, Executive Vice Governor of Anhui Province, Chris Poulter, Leader of Derby City Council, Chris Wood, British Consul General-designate in Shanghai, Stewart Ferguson, Regional Director of China-Britain Business Council, and more than 50 representatives of the Chinese and British political and business circles were present.

Chen noted in her speech that the promotion of Anhui in Britain is not only an exhibition of both the strengths and progress of Anhui and the achievement of China over the past 70 years, but also a bridge of close exchanges and cooperation between China and the UK. Looking ahead, she expressed the hope that China and Britain would build new pillar of cooperation around key projects to strengthen strategic synergy and policy coordination in advancing the Belt and Road Initiative, the Yangtze River Economic Belt, Northern Powerhouse and Midlands Engines, and expand trade and investment cooperation. The two sides would explore new avenues of business cooperation based on their respective and complementing strengths in the fields of advanced manufacturing, automobile, and technological innovation, and tap new potential in new industries. They would accumulate new energy for friendship based on people-to-people exchanges to continue to intensify cooperation in tourism and education to enhance friendship and promote sub-national cooperation between China and Britain, so as to make greater contribution to China-UK “Golden Era”.

Vice Governor Deng said that Anhui boasts its beautiful scenery, abundant resources, rich culture, superior location and perfect infrastructure. It possesses a key position in promoting the Belt and Road Initiative and building the Yangtze River Economic Belt. Anhui has a tradition of innovation, enjoying advanced science and education. The villagers of Xiaogang in Fengyang County, Anhui Province took the lead in adopting the household responsibility system, which kicked off 40 years of reform and opening up in China. As an industrial hub, Anhui is the birthplace of the world's first VCD, China's first air-conditioner and first personal computer. It has a long history of exchanges with the UK. More than a century ago, Qimen black tea from Anhui was exported to the UK. In 1991, British companies began to invest in Anhui. In recent years, the economic and trade investment, scientific and technological exchanges and cooperation between the two sides have been continuously strengthened.

Talking about the World Manufacturing Convention 2019 to be held in Anhui this September, Deng said that Anhui has invited the UK as the Country of Honour. He hoped that the British business community would actively participate in the Convention and promote the in-depth China-UK cooperation in the field of innovation and entrepreneurship.

The participants said that Anhui and the UK are facing major opportunities for cooperation. The two sides should make full use of the platforms such as the World Manufacturing Convention to further strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation.
