Minister Ma Hui Visits The Times

On June 11, 2019, Minister Ma Hui of the Chinese Embassy in the UK visited The Times and met with Chief Leader Writer Simon Nixon, Foreign Editor Roland Watson, and Diplomatic Correspondent Catherine Philp. Zeng Rong, Minister Counsellor and Spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy, was present.

Minister Ma elaborated on his views and positions on China-UK relations, China-US relations, China-US economic and trade consultations, the US ban on Huawei, the South China Sea, and Hong Kong SAR government's amendment to the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance and the Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Ordinance. Ma noted frankly that the West lacks a comprehensive and objective understanding of China. Holding misconception and stereotyped views on China’ development, some Western media reported on China in a biased and inaccurate way, which could mislead the public and have a negative effect on enhancing understanding and cooperation among peoples. He expressed the hope that The Times would report on China’s development and international role in a more objective, fair and balanced manner, so as to present a true, lively and complete picture of China to its readers.

Nixon thanked Minister Ma for his briefing on China’s policy and stance, saying that with China's rapid development and increasing international influence, the outside world is paying more attention to China’s progress. The Times is willing to maintain a constant dialogue with the Chinese Embassy in the UK and further promote its coverage on China.
