Minister Counsellor Yang Xiaokun Attends Sichuan-London Economic and Trade Cooperation Summit

On June 19, Minister Counsellor Yang Xiaokun attended the Sichuan-London Economic and Trade Cooperation Summit held by the People’s Government of Sichuan Province in London and delivered a speech. Deng Xiaogang, Deputy Secretary of the Sichuan CPC Provincial Committee, Graham Stuart MP, Minister for Investment at the Department for International Trade, Lord Sassoon, Chairman of China-Britain Business Council (CBBC), Lord Bates, Member of the British House of Lords, and nearly 200 representatives of the Chinese and British political, business, and educational circles were present at the event.

In his speech, Deputy Secretary Deng briefed the participants on the basic situation of Sichuan Province and its exchanges with the UK. He expressed the hope that Sichuan would expand cooperation and deepen the results of mutual benefit with the UK in the following aspects: strengthening manufacturing cooperation in the fields of electronics, automobiles, aviation and biomedicine research, development and production; cooperation in financial industry, sharing open opportunities in the areas of banking, insurance, and securities; cooperation in culture and tourism, focusing on the upgrading of tourism and health consumption; cooperation in science, technology and education, actively expanding the exchanges between universities and research institutes.

Minister Counsellor Yang talked about the fruitful results in the cooperation between Sichuan Province and the UK in economic, trade, science, technology and education. He hoped that the two sides would seize the strategic opportunity of the Belt and Road Initiative, strengthening the development strategy and policy docking and expanding the opportunities for mutual benefit and cooperation, deepen financial cooperation, promoting their complementary strengths and achieving common development, and have closer people-to-people and cultural exchanges, enhancing cultural intercommunication and people-to-people connectivity, so as to make new contribution to the “Golden Era” of China-UK relations.

Stuart said that at the successful 10th China-UK Economic and Financial Dialogue, the two sides have reached important consensus on cooperation in the fields of macroeconomic policy, trade, finance, the Belt and Road Initiative and third-party market. The British investment in Sichuan Province has continued to expand, and cooperation in education, finance, and manufacturing has achieved positive results. He hoped that the two sides would seize the opportunities to further deepen their cooperation.

Lord Sassoon said that with the in-depth development of Sichuan-UK economic and trade cooperation, the bilateral trade volume in 2018 reached 1.2 billion US dollars. BP, AstraZeneca, GlaxoSmithKline, Standard Chartered Bank and Jardine Group all set up branches or subsidiaries in Sichuan Province. It is the 25th anniversary of the Chengdu Office of the CBBC in Sichuan. The positive results of the 10th China-UK Economic and Financial Dialogue will create more opportunities for the sub-national economic and trade cooperation.

Afterwards, the guest speakers witnessed the signing ceremony of the cooperation agreement between enterprises and educational institutions.
