Minister Chen Wen Attends the Opening Ceremony of the SKA Global Headquarters

On July 10, Minister Chen Wen attended the opening ceremony of the SKA Global Headquarters at the Jodrell Bank Observatory in the UK. The ceremony was presided over by Dame Nancy Rothwell, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Manchester. Professor Phil Diamond, Director General of the SKAO, and Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell, President of the Royal Society of Scotland and Co-discoverer of the first radio pulsars, spoke at the event, briefing the guests on the basic situation of the square kilometer array radio telescopes (SKA), the history of the progress of radio astronomy, and the significant role of the SKA in radio astronomy. More than 200 people including Professor Mark Thomson, Executive Chair of the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), Lord David Willetts, former Minister of State for Universities and Science, representatives from SKAO member states and embassies and consulates of member states in the UK, members of the SKAO Board of Directors, and representatives of local government and academic circles, etc were present.

Minister Chen briefed Director General Diamond on the efforts of the Chinese government to accelerate China’s opening up and innovation. She said, China is actively carrying out scientific and technological cooperation with countries around the world including the UK, and participating in major international science plans and projects such as SKA. She hoped that with the joint efforts of China and other SKA member states, the SKA would achieve fruitful results and make positive contribution to the understanding and exploration of the universe.
