Minister Chen Wen Attends the CGN Chinese New Year Reception
2020/01/17

On January16, Minister Chen Wen attended the Chinese New Year reception hosted by the Chinese General Nuclear Power Group (CGN) and delivered a speech. Around 200 guests attended the event, including Zheng Dongshan, Chief Executive Officer of CGN UK, Nadhim Zahawi, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, Alex Chisholm, Permanent Secretary at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, and representatives from Chinese and British governments and enterprises.

In her speech, Minister Chen said, as the world is undergoing profound changes unseen in a century, the year 2020 marks the fifth anniversary of the China-UK “Golden Era”. This means a new starting point for China-UK relationship and business cooperation across the board. Under the new circumstances, deeper reform and further opening-up in China and Brexit in the UK will create huge opportunities, which our two countries should seize with both hands. We should foster a fair, transparent and non-discriminatory business environment for the companies of our two countries, which will in turn encourage broader and deeper business cooperation. In particular, we could promote deeper and more concrete cooperation on the Belt and Road Initiative. Together we will make the pie of our common interests bigger, deliver more tangible benefits to the peoples of our two countries, and make new contribution to world peace and development. She further mentioned that CGN UK is an outstanding representative of Chinese companies investing in the UK. It has made tremendous contribution to the business cooperation between the two countries. Minister Chen expressed her hope that everyone present at the reception would continue to work together in the new era, promote the steady development of such cooperation, achieve new success, and contribute more “golden fruits” to China-UK “Golden Era”.

Zheng briefed the participants on the development of CGN over the past year, saying that the year 2020 is an important year for the UK, CGN UK and EDF Energy. CGN UK is fully committed to promoting Hinkley Point C nuclear power project. Besides, the generic design assessment of Hualong One nuclear technology will be in Phase 4 and the research of feasibility on Bradwell B will be finalized in June. The UK government will soon publish the white paper on nuclear power, with which he hopes to boost the confidence in British nuclear power industry. COP 26 will be held in the UK this November and CGN is ready to make contribution to Britain’s goal of cutting emissions to net zero by 2050.

Zahawi said, after Chinese New Year, Britain will complete Brexit and strive to foster more positive diplomatic relations with global partners including China. In 2019, Britain became the first country in the world to pass laws that commits itself to net zero carbon emission by 2050. Nuclear power will make enormous contribution to this goal, with Hinkley Point C, Bradwell B and Sizewell C playing important roles during this process. In 2020, Scotland will host the COP 26 to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The UK is looking forward to enhancing cooperation with China to jointly tackle challenges like climate change.
