Wang Yi Talks about Indo-Pacific Concept
2019/07/31

On July 31, 2019 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Chinese and foreign media after attending the China-Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Bangkok, Thailand. One question went as, after the United States, Japan, India, and other countries put forward their Indian-Pacific strategy or concept, the ASEAN summit adopted its ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific in June, and the Indo-Pacific concept has become a new topic. How do you view this?

Wang Yi answered, this is an issue involving regional cooperation. Over the years, thanks to the concerted efforts of all countries in the region, regional cooperation has flourished with a series of important cooperation mechanisms including China Plus ASEAN, ASEAN Plus Three, and East Asia Summit being put in place and a constantly extending cooperation framework with the ASEAN as the core being set up. It has played an important role in regional peace and development.

Wang Yi said, as an important participant in and contributor to the regional cooperation, the Chinese side has always maintained an open and constructive attitude in this cooperation. We believe that no matter what initiatives and ideas are put forward, the following principles should be upheld: first, focus on East Asia and Asia, without affecting the existing cooperation mechanisms and achievements in the region; second, focus on cooperation and consensus, without engaging in geographic confrontation and games; third, focus on openness and inclusiveness, without forming factions or seeking small cliques.

Wang Yi said, the ASEAN has recently put forward its prospects and ideas for regional cooperation, and we notice that many of these principles and ideas are consistent with those of the Chinese side, such as adhering to ASEAN's core position, insisting on openness, inclusiveness and transparency, upholding dialogue rather than confrontation, emphasizing on economic cooperation, strengthening connectivity, achieving common prosperity, and so on. We are willing to maintain communication and coordination with the ASEAN in this regard, cherish and maintain the hard-won sound situation for regional cooperation, and give positive guide and promotion to the healthy development of cooperation in the right direction.
