Wang Yi Attends the Launch of the China-Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Young Leaders Scholarship
2019/07/31

On July 31, 2019 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi attended the launch of the China-Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Young Leaders Scholarship in Bangkok, Thailand. The Foreign Ministers of the ASEAN countries and the ASEAN Secretary-General were present.

Wang Yi expressed in his speech that in November last year, Premier Li Keqiang announced the good news to set up the China-ASEAN Young Leaders Scholarship at the China-ASEAN Leaders' Meeting. Within just 8 months, we have completed a great deal of work on the scholarship project's approval, design, and admission. In September this year, the first batch of nearly one hundred awardees will go China for further study in succession. This fully reflects the "ASEAN efficiency" and "Chinese speed".

Wang Yi said, China-ASEAN relations are flourishing, with our peoples as the strongest roots. China-ASEAN relations are stable and long-lasting, with our peoples as the most powerful driving force. It is the educational cooperation which bonds the peoples. By advocating the establishment of the Young Leaders Scholarship, the Chinese side hopes to strengthen communication and exchanges between people of both sides through educational cooperation, especially among young generations, so as to enhance mutual understanding and friendship, and shorten the distance between the peoples. We are willing to encourage more outstanding young people from the ASEAN countries to study in China through the Young Leaders Scholarship program. It is hoped that the youth from China and the ASEAN countries will enhance their friendship through learning from each other so as to become the inheritors and builders of China-ASEAN friendly cooperation, and constantly inject fresh blood and positive energy into bilateral strategic partnership.

Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai of Thailand and Foreign Secretary Teodoro Lopez Locsin of the Philippines respectively delivered their speeches. They thanked the Chinese side for providing the scholarship for the ASEAN students, saying that strengthening the exchanges in education has long been a key area of ASEAN-China cooperation, which will help enhance the mutual understanding and mutual trust between the peoples. The youth is an important pillar of the ASEAN-China relations in the future. The ASEAN-China Young Leaders Scholarship program will strongly promote the development of the ASEAN-China strategic partnership.
