Wang Yi Talks about Promoting the Political Settlement Process of the Korean Peninsula Issue

On August 2, 2019 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi gave his views on promoting the political settlement process of the Korean Peninsula issue at the 9th East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Bangkok, Thailand.

Wang Yi said, President Xi Jinping paid a successful state visit to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), during which the leaders of the two countries affirmed the general direction of the political settlement of the Korean Peninsula issue. Leaders of the DPRK and the United States (US) walked across the South-North military demarcation line together and held a meeting in Panmunjom, where leaders of the DPRK, the US and the Republic of Korea (ROK) also held friendly meetings. It demonstrates that all parties concerned are committed to seeking consensus and solving problems through dialogue and negotiation. Meanwhile, we have also noticed that there are still difficulties of one kind or another in pressing forward the process of peace talks on the Korean Peninsula.

Wang Yi noted, at present, the political settlement process of the Korean Peninsula issue is still on the track and opportunities are also still in the hands of all parties concerned. It is hoped that all parties concerned will move forward with the "dual-track" approach, and take phased and synchronized steps in a bid to promote dialogues and negotiations. All parties concerned should meet each other halfway to find an effective way to realize the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, establish a peace mechanism on the Korean Peninsula and properly address each other's reasonable concerns. The Chinese side will continue to play a constructive role to this end.
