Wang Yi Meets with Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha of the Republic of Korea (ROK)
2019/08/20

On August 20, 2019, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met in Beijing with Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha of the Republic of Korea (ROK), who was in China for the ninth Trilateral Foreign Ministers Meeting among China, the ROK and Japan.

Wang Yi expressed, as friendly neighbouring countries, China and the ROK have enjoyed sound development in bilateral relations and steady progress in cooperation across the board. It is hoped that the ROK side will grasp the important opportunities brought by China's development, actively participate in the Belt and Road Initiative, jointly develop third-party markets and speed up the second phase of the Free Trade Agreement talks. Under the current situation, the two countries should particularly strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation in high technology and innovation, intensify coordination under such multilateral frameworks as the G20, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations as well as multilateral frameworks among China, the ROK and Japan. China, the ROK and Japan should work together to safeguard multilateralism and free trade. It is hoped that Japan and the ROK will resolve the current disputes properly through dialogue and consultation.

Kang Kyung-wha said, my visit to China ahead of the 27th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relationship between the ROK and China carries special significance. The ROK side is willing to make joint efforts with the Chinese side to continuously enhance dialogues and communications of all levels and strengthen exchanges and cooperation in fields including innovation and environment protection as well as forge a new pattern of mutually beneficial cooperation between our two countries so as to add new connotations to ROK-China relations and expand the width and depth of bilateral relations.

Both sides exchanged views on the Korean Peninsula issue. Kang Kyung-wha expressed, the ROK side hopes that the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the United States (US) will restart talks as soon as possible, and that all parties concerned will seize the opportunity of peace on the Korean Peninsula. She also expressed the ROK side's sincere hope to continue to improve the relations between the ROK and the DPRK. Wang Yi expressed, the Korean Peninsula issue is still on the track of political solution, therefore all parties concerned should meet each other halfway, actively interact with each other and make more efforts to enhance understanding and build mutual trust.
