Wang Yi Meets with Foreign Minister Taro Kono of Japan

On August 20, 2019, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met in Beijing with Foreign Minister Taro Kono of Japan, who was in China for the ninth Trilateral Foreign Ministers' Meeting among China, the Republic of Korea and Japan.

Wang Yi said, China and Japan have seen further improvement and development recently in bilateral relations. Both countries should cherish the hard-won achievement with double efforts. The Chinese side is willing to, together with the Japanese side, observe the principles enshrined in the four political documents between our two countries, face history squarely, be forward-looking, continue to consolidate political foundation and enhance mutual trust and cooperation. We are confident that under the strategic guidance of leaders of both countries and with the concerted efforts of the two peoples, bilateral relations will surely enjoy a bright outlook. Both sides need to intensify communication, and expand consensus on cooperation in the areas of politics, economy, trade, investment, people-to-people and cultural engagement and others, so as to create necessary conditions and a good atmosphere for high-level political exchanges in the next stage. Both sides should strengthen cooperation in the multilateral arena and jointly combat all forms of protectionism and unilateralism, while safeguarding multilateralism, free trade and the international order with the United Nations as the core. Wang Yi clearly stated the Chinese side's principle positions on sensitive issues between China and Japan. He stressed that both sides should strengthen risk prevention and control, and handle differences in a constructive manner to make joint efforts for the constant improvement and development of bilateral relations.

Taro Kono expressed that the state leaders of Japan and China held a successful meeting at the recent G20 Osaka Summit, charting the course for the development of bilateral relations for the next stage. The Japanese side is willing to work closely with the Chinese side to further deepen practical cooperation, facilitate people-to-people and cultural exchanges in youth and tourism, properly manage and control differences, and ensure positive results of bilateral high-level political exchanges in the next stage, in a bid to promote Japan-China relations for constant development.

Wang Yi elaborated on the Chinese side's principle position against the United States' attempt to deploy land-based intermediate-range missiles in the region. Taro Kono reiterated that Japan will continue to adhere to the purely defensive defense strategy.
