President Xi Jinping Speaks by Phone with Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev
2020/03/24

President Xi Jinping spoke with Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on the phone on the evening of 24 March.

Xi described the ravaging epidemic as a major test for all countries. At the most difficult stage in China's fight against the disease, the Kazakh government and people from all sectors offered steadfast support to China. In response to the spreading virus in Kazakhstan, swift and decisive measures have been taken under the leadership of President Tokayev. China views this sense of responsibility for the people as most commendable. As a friendly neighbor and a permanent comprehensive strategic partner, China keenly understands Kazakhstan's current situation and will actively provide support and assistance. The mutual support between China and Kazakhstan testifies to the strength and uniqueness of our relationship and sets a fine example for international cooperation against the epidemic.

Xi pointed out that viruses respect no borders and epidemics do not distinguish between races. This global public health emergency has driven home the urgency and imperative of building a community with a shared future for mankind. Only with solidarity and cooperation can the international community prevail over the epidemic and protect our common home. China will work with Kazakhstan and other countries to strengthen international cooperation against the epidemic and safeguard global public health security.

Xi noted that the epidemic will be short-lived, but cooperation will be long-lasting. While posing a challenge to China-Kazakhstan cooperation, the disease also creates new opportunities. The two countries should unswervingly deepen political trust, expand cooperation in digital economy, health care and other fields, and foster new growth areas for bilateral relations. He expressed confidence that China-Kazakhstan Belt and Road cooperation will emerge stronger and bear more fruits after weathering the challenge of this epidemic.

Tokayev commended the remarkable achievements of the Chinese people in fighting the epidemic under President Xi's able leadership, as such achievements have brought confidence and hope to people around the world. The entire world has been impressed by the exceptional strength of China's health care system and the dedication of Chinese medical workers. China has once again demonstrated its governance capacity in tackling complex and difficult challenges with high efficiency. Kazakhstan commends and congratulates China on its achievements. As Kazakhstan cannot stay immune to a virus that is spreading around the world, Kazakhstan hopes to strengthen cooperation with China to overcome the epidemic at an early date. Kazakhstan is committed to deepening its permanent comprehensive strategic partnership with China and promoting Belt and Road cooperation, as it serves the shared interests of both peoples. Kazakhstan is also ready for closer communication and cooperation with China within the frameworks of the United Nations and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
