Ambassador Liu and Prince Charles Attend Premiere of Documentary on Restoration of Lodge of Retirement in Forbidden City

On May 10, Ambassador Liu Xiaoming and Prince Charles attended the premiere of "The Emperor's Secret Garden", a documentary on the restoration of the Lodge of Retirement in the Forbidden City, which was held in the British Museum . Also present at the event were over 320 representatives from all walks of life in Britain and members of a delegation from China's Palace Museum.

"The Emperor's Secret Garden" was jointly produced by the Prince's Charities Foundation (UK), the Palace Museum, The the Robert H.N. Ho Family Foundation (Hong Kong) and the West Park Pictures (UK). It narrates the six years of China-foreign cooperation in the restoration of the Lodge of Retirement in the Forbidden City, with focus on the re-exploration and reuse of traditional folk craftsmanship during the restoration. As a part of the Qianlong Garden elaborately built in the Palace of Tranquil Longevity after Emperor Qianlong abdicated, the Lodge of Retirement is known as the structure with the most exquisite craftsmanship and the most magnificent decoration in the Forbidden City.

After watching the documentary, Prince Charles said to Ambassador Liu that the meaningful content and the artistic beauty in the documentary increased his admiration for China's profound history and traditional culture, and that he hoped the Prince's Charities Foundation under his leadership may carry out more cooperation with China on the protection of traditional culture. Ambassador Liu appreciated the fruitful cooperation made by the Prince's Charities Foundation with China in recent years for protecting traditional Chinese culture and said that China is willing to further enhance the cooperation with the Foundation to make joint contributions to the protection of the heritage of human civilization and to the promotion of mutual understanding and friendship between different peoples.
