Wang Yi Holds Telephone Talks with Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Boris Johnson of the UK

On September 1, 2017, Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks at request with Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Boris Johnson of the UK, exchanging views on the current situation on the Korean Peninsula.

Wang Yi expressed that through a stance of maintaining regional peace and stability as well as international non-proliferation regime, China opposes the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)'s ballistic missile launches that go against the United Nations Security Council resolutions. The UN Security Council has spoken with one voice in this regard once again.

Wang Yi said that peace to the peninsula situation cannot be abandoned with the end of the joint military drills between the US and the Republic of Korea and the easing of tensions on the Peninsula. All parties should act cautiously, not adopt words and deeds that may intensify tension, and work jointly to create conditions for the resumption of dialogue. China will continue its unremitting efforts to seek a peaceful solution to the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue through political dialogue, and hope that other relevant parties will also shoulder their own responsibilities and play a positive role.

Boris Johnson said the UK expressed grave concern over the DPRK's missile launches once again regardless of relevant UN Security Council resolutions. The UK agrees that the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue should be solved in a peaceful way, and it has fully realized the positive efforts made by China in this regard. The UK is willing to continuously maintain close communication with China regarding a proper solution to the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue.
