Fu Ying Talks about Exhibition of the First Emperor: China's TerraCotta Army & Sino-UK Cultural Exchanges
2007-12-16 00:00

On December 14, 2007, H.E. Mme. Ambassador Fu Ying gave interview to CCTV and commented on the Exhibition of the First Emperor: China's Terra Cotta Army held in the British Museum and Sino-UK cultural exchanges.

Fu Ying denoted that the Exhibition of the First Emperor: China's TerraCotta Army attracted broad attention of UK public, which reflects the interest of UK society toward China. There are many successful experiences and innovations in the planning, marketing, promotion and layout of the exhibition. Fu Ying said that she felt the great interest in China of all circles in UK after she took office in UK. There is "China fever" in many countries all over the world, which is favourable to China with both opportunity and challenge. China should make efforts to grasp this opportunity to project positive images of this country, CPC party and Chinese people.

Fu Ying said that General Secretary Hu Jintao emphasized cooperation, mutual benefits and prosperity between China and the world in his report to the 17th CPC Congress and put forward the policy of strengthening cultural exchanges. At present, Sino-UK cultural exchanges are facing good opportunities. Beijing and London will hold the Olympic games in 2008 and 2012 respectively, which provide good opportunities for bilateral cultural exchanges. The ancient China shall be introduced to foreign countries, but the more important thing is to present modern China. UK will hold "China Now" next year, which is a large-scale cultural event, initiated by UK enterprises and includes more than 700 programs. There are many programs about modern China, for example, "China Design Now" exhibition to be held by Victoria and Albert Museum can vividly reflect modern China. There are also performances by National Ballet of China, exhibition of traditional Chinese medicine and Chinese tea culture. It is believed that the 2008 "China Now" will usher in a new upsurge in bilateral cultural exchanges.

The Exhibition of the First Emperor: China's Terracotta Army held by British Museum is the largest overseas exhibition of Chinese Terra Cotta warriors and horses. A total of 20 Terra Cotta warriors and horses and 100 other antiques of Qin Dynasty are displayed. The exhibition was formally open to public on September 13 and will last till April 6, 2008. The exhibition has won broad and unprecedented attention of all walks of life in UK. Nearly 600,000 tickets have been sold up to now. The British Museum is considering extending open hours till midnight during Christmas holiday.
