Embassy Spokesperson’s Remarks on the UK Side’s Comment on Ukraine
2022-03-15 20:00

Question: At an interview, Minister of State James Cleverly from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office of the UK called on China and all countries across the world to denounce “Russia’s invasion of Ukraine”, and said that the UK government had received no vow from China that the Chinese government would stay out of the conflict. Afterwards, Shadow leveling up Secretary Lisa Nandy said that China ought to “play its part in making the world safer” if it aims to be a “global player”. What is your comment?

Embassy Spokesperson: China is always a staunch force for safeguarding world peace and promoting common development.

We are deeply concerned and grieved over the situation in Ukraine. China has been facilitating dialogue for peace and working vigorously to urge the relevant parties to return to the track of settling the issue through negotiations. The Red Cross Society of China has provided supplies in emergency humanitarian assistance to Ukraine.

China’s fundamental position on the Ukraine issue is clear and consistent: The sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries must be respected, the purposes and principles of the UN Charter must be followed, and international disputes should be settled peacefully. At the same time, China embraces a vision of common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security. We believe that the security of one country should not be achieved at the expense of the security of another. Still less should regional security rely on expanding military blocs. The legitimate security concerns of all countries should be respected.

The top priority now is to alleviate tensions as much as possible, instead of adding fuel to the fire. Efforts should be taken to avoid further deterioration of the situation. Harms done to civilians and humanitarian crises, in particular, must be prevented. China supports all international efforts that are constructive and conducive to a political settlement, and will continue to play a constructive role in promoting dialogue for peace.
