Ambassador Liu Xiaoming and Wife Attend V&A's Fashion in Motion 2019
2019-11-04 01:56

On the evening of November 1, Ambassador Liu Xiaoming and Madam Hu Pinghua were invited by the board of Victoria and Alber Museum (V&A Museum) to Fashion in Motion 2019 held in the Raphael Gallery of V&A Museum. The event showcased 20 pieces of works by well-known Chinese couturier Guo Pei in her latest autumn/winter 2019/20 collection entitled Alternate Universe.

Guo Pei is among the first generation of designers trained in China after the reform and opening up. Since 1998, Guo Pei has designed outfits for the hosts of CCTV's Spring Festival Gala for 20 years in a row. In 2008, she created 285 pieces of outfits for the awarding ceremonies of Beijing Olympic and Paralympic Games. In 2015, her works, including Qing Hua Ci (Blue-and-White Porcelain) and Da Jin (Magnificent Gold), were exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York titled China:Through the Looking Glass. In 2016, Guo Pei was awarded the title of the National March 8th Standard-Bearer and became the first and the only current guest member from China in the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. In the same year, she was named one of TIME magazine's 100 Most Influential People.

Guo Pei's collection Alternate Universe was debuted at Paris Couture Week in July, 2019. Inspired by myths, legends, religion and nature, she uses pineapple hemp fabric, raffia embroidery and three-dimensional embroidery techniques to conjure up mysterious creatures and build up an unknown world.

Ambassador Liu congratulated Guo Pei on her staging at V&A's Fashion in Motion 2019. While speaking highly of her contribution to enhancing cultural and art exchanges between China and the West, Ambassador Liu encouraged Guo Pei to design and to tell a good story of China through her works and enable more Western people to understand the arts and creation of China today.

Guo Pei said, "I am very pleased to be the featured designer of V&A's Fashion in Motion 20th anniversary show. This will also be my first-ever show in the United Kingdom. The V&A is a historic platform, preserving and celebrating art and design in many forms, from many cultures and very often spanning many centuries. I feel fortunate to be included and am very much looking forward to the collaboration."

V&A fashion curator Oriole Cullen said, "Guo Pei's work demonstrates the height of what can be achieved in the skilled ateliers of an haute couture house. We are delighted to be working with Guo Pei to showcase a selection of garments from her uniquely beautiful Alternate Universe collection."

Fashion in Motion is an annual key event presented by the V&A. Featuring one leading fashion designer a year, Fashion in Motion brings on the catwalk experience by modeling it against the beautiful backdrop of the Museum, creating dialogues across time and space, which is a unique perspective for the audience to experience fashion. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the event. The Victoria and Albert Museum is the world's most important museum of design and fashion. To be featured in Fashion in Motion means a huge affirmation for fashion designers. Over the past 20 years, Fashion in Motion has hosted works by Alexander McQueen, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Takada Kenzo, Yohji Yamamoto, and Ma Ke.
